Bosch Hot Water Services – When Is A Spud Not A Potato?

Understanding the ins and outs of a Bosch hot water service can only be achieved through many years of experience of installing them and fault finding these units throughout Adelaide. The older style instantaneous water heaters were made to last the test of time.

These hot water systems are very straight forward to work on if you know what you are doing as they were pre the computer generation. Bosch hot water services such as the 10P, TF325, Water Wizard, Econo Master, 16P, 13H and 10B all have one common part inside of them which easily causes a simple fault if you know what to look for.

What Is A Spud?

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the humble potato and that is what we all think of when someone mentions a spud, but when we talk about the Bosch hot water service the spud has another reference which is not a potato.

The pilot light for the Bosch continuous flow models has a small little round disk which sits in the pilot light assembly. This small metal disk has a pin prick sized hole in it which controls the amount of gas which passes through it to keep the pilot light alight.

What Can Go Wrong With The Spud?

Over time small particles from the older steel gas pipe can get stuck inside this small hole which causes the pilot light not to generate enough of a flame and therefore causes the thermocouple to trigger a no flame alert and cuts the gas supply off (flame failure device).

Another common fault is small bugs and insects crawling inside the pilot light assembly. Many small insects and bugs are attracted to this area as it is consistently warm. When the bug makes it way inside it immediately finds out that the reason this little location is so warm is because there is a gas flame and that means immediately upon the bug entering it gets fried and dies in location.

What happens when we have a fried bug is that the gas cannot get through the spud and once again, we flame failure and no hot water being  produced from the Bosch hot water service.

How To Fix The Issue Of No Hot Water?

You will hear many plumbers say this cannot be fixed, but that is not the case. If you hire the right plumber such as the Hot Water Specialists of Adelaide, we will fix your Bosch hot water system (conditions apply).

In very plain and simple terms it is a matter of removing 2 screws and undoing one hexagonal nut. Once the pilot light assembly is removed carefully it’s a matter of getting the spud out. The process of removing the spud is very delicate and if it is dropped it will most likely be lost or damaged. The spud is approximately 4mm in diameter and made from very thin aluminium. The key is safely removing the metal disc and cleaning it out without any damage, a task only a professional hot water technician will be capable of in Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills of South Australia.
